"The Last Homely House"  - Like Elrond's house nestled in the middle of the forests of Rivendell, Snow Wolf Lodge (Pagosa Springs, CO) elicits imaginations of the world of Hobbits and fellowships and High Elves. Especially in the winter, with a blanket of snow on the ground, a fire roaring in the hearth, and a hemisphere of gemlike stars suspended over the chilled landscape.  For many years, this lodge served as the main hub of activity for students spending 3 1/2 months in the southern Rocky Mountains sharpening their minds at Summit Semester (now Summit Gap Year).  I was enraptured by a visit of only a few days.  I can't begin to imagine the life-long memories formed by those lucky enough to attend the full semester.
