The detailed pencil sketch of the Snow Wolf Lodge, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is rendered as perhaps many a former Summit Semester graduate might fondly, if not fancifully, remember it.   Literally miles up a dirt road, away from city lights and major highways, Snow Wolf is settled in its own little vale, surrounded by a forested landscape. The idyllic setting  elicits imaginations of the world of Hobbits and fellowships and High Elves. Especially in the winter.
 
Cast under a large full moon on a  late-fall night, the chimney betrays a roaring fire just steps inside the hewn log walls...beckoning every chilled visitor.   A large mug of steaming hot chocolate or tea awaits them just inside the cavernous upper great room.  You'll likely catch a raucous hand of full-contact, never-ending Dutch Blitz beneath the timbered vaulted ceiling.  Or folks nestled into comfortable sofas and chairs in conversations both loud and soft, staring into the dancing flames!

The remnants of the season's first snow still linger on the shadow side of the lodge whilst a hemisphere of gemlike stars suspends over the chilled landscape. 
 
For many years, this lodge served as the main hub of activity for students spending 2 1/2 months in the southern Rocky Mountains sharpening their minds at Summit Semester (now Summit Gap Year). 
 
During Thanksgiving 2013, I was enraptured by a visit of only a few days.  I can't begin to imagine the life-long memories formed by those lucky enough to attend the full semester.
